The Place d'Austerlitz in Ajaccio (sometimes called Place du Casone in memory of an old building) is the place where, according to legend, Napoleon went as a child.

Sheltered under large rocks behind the square, hence the name 'Napoleon Cave,' this young boy was fascinated by the great characters of the story and then dreamed of conquests and glory.

A monument ,in his honor was inaugurated in 1938 that recalled the victories and achievements of the emperor.

How to explore Place d'Austerlitz?

  • There you can see an imposing monument to the glory of Napoleon. It is a sculpture of Napoleon Bonaparte with two eagles in front of him and a huge leaning stele evoking his victories and achievements. He is dressed in military clothing as he was dressed for the Battle of Austerlitz. The statue is at the top of a granite pyramid where you need a staircase to climb and see. The dates 1769 and 1821 embedded in the monument correspond to the date of birth and death of Napoleon Bonaparte. The statue is a replica of that of the Cours d'honneur de Paris aux Invalides.
  • You can get panoramic views of the city if you ascend the steps all the way to the top of the building.
  • The square is a vast area utilized for various activities and events, including concerts.
  • A comfortable spot to take a seat and reflect on the history that connects the Emperor to the place where he was born.
  • On one side, there is a porch, and the most attractive feature of this porch is the beautiful flowers.
  • When you approach with the anticipation of a stunning panorama of the coast, you are instead greeted by roofs, a road, and two impressive tennis or paddle courts.
