Place Foch

Located in the center of Ajaccio's old quarter, close to the east coast, lies the majestic Place Foch.

Stunning flora in the area inspired the previous names for this square - Alder Square and Palm Tree Square.

The plaza served a functional purpose in ancient Ajaccio, connecting the city with the port. The plaza is open for all at all hours year-round with no entrance cost. Every Thursday throughout the months of July and August, there is a fascinating performance of the Changing of the Guard.

The plaza is accessible from just about everywhere in the city by public transportation.

How to explore Place Foch?

• Tour the beautiful Four Lions Fountain in the center of Place Foch. Take pictures by the square's stunning granite fountain. Four guardian lions flank the marble statue of Napoleon in a Roman toga.
• Take some time out for leisure with a picnic basket and take in the surrounding structure.
• There is a food market along one-half of the square. Peruse the market for French nougat and chorizo while taking in the blue-green hues and noises of Corsica.
• Barter with the street sellers selling food and drinks, and then enjoy your lunch while people-watching in the square.
• In the afternoon, acquire local food. Jams, cheeses, spices, wines, and more are just some of the market's offerings. Make use of any available free samples before making a purchase.
• You can see boats and the dazzling Mediterranean Sea from the easternmost part of the plaza. Take a look at the white buildings that border Place Foch.
• Near the square's opposite end are a number of lounges and cafes. Have a coffee and a crepe while you plot out your remaining city hours.
• Take in the plaza's picturesque setting at night when lights strung among the palm trees turn on.
• The Congress Palace, the Bonaparte House Museum, and the Musée Fesch are just a few of the notable cultural landmarks you can visit while strolling through this charming region of Ajaccio.
