National World War II Memorial

The National World War II Memorial is a monument on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., that was founded to honor 16 million Americans who served in the military during World War II, including the more than 400,000 who lost their lives.

The memorial has a central plaza with a big fountain and two arches on opposite sides that represent the Atlantic and Pacific theatres of war. The plaza is ringed by 56 granite pillars, each with the name of one of the 48 states in the Union at the time, as well as the District of Columbia, Alaska, Hawaii, the Commonwealth of the Philippines, Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
