The National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC) is a museum located on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. It is the only national museum dedicated to documenting the history, culture, and achievements of African Americans.


The museum was established in 2003 and opened to the public on September 24, 2016. It features more than 36,000 artifacts and documents that illustrate the African American experience, from the transatlantic slave trade to the present day. The museum's collections include objects related to slavery, segregation, the Civil Rights Movement, African American art, music, literature, sports, and many other aspects of African American history and culture.


The NMAAHC is divided into several sections, including the history galleries, cultural galleries, community galleries, and the Contemplative Court. The history galleries feature exhibits that explore the experiences of African Americans from the colonial period to the present day. The cultural galleries showcase African American contributions to art, music, literature, and other fields. The community galleries examine the ways in which African Americans have organized and created communities throughout history.


The Contemplative Court is a quiet space designed to encourage reflection and contemplation. It features a water fountain and quotes from prominent African Americans etched into the walls.
