The 'Market of Our Lady of Africa,' also known as El Mercado Nuestra Senora de Africa, is a renowned and imposing collection of market stalls, stores, and dining establishments situated on the Avenida de San Sebastián in Santa Cruz.

THINGS TO DO:

Embrace the vibe of the place as you wander around:

This intriguing market, which opened in 1944, is housed in a unique structure with Moorish-style arches, patios, and a Latin American vibe.

The location can be found by following the shopping carts; the mercado is a favorite among locals, including restaurateurs, and offers reasonably priced fresh produce.

Pick your daily essentials and gourmet here:

Two busy floors are divided into stalls dotted with colorful flower vendors, churro stands, and lush subtropical vegetation. Although it is small (about 140 stalls) by Spanish standards, it is still fascinating because stalls sell a huge variety of fish and mountains of fresh fruit and vegetables. Additionally, you can purchase bread, regional cheese, wine, and cold cuts for a picnic.

Purchase your gourmet deli goods here to save money, including jars of cactus marmalade, local honey, herbs, and spices, as well as jars of mojo salsa spiced with chiles.

Pay special attention if you are a cheese lover:

Go to stalls like Mi Mundo Gourmet, which sells and offers cheese and jamón (ham) tastings, or Herboristeria Mil Variedades, which specializes in medicinal herbs for every conceivable ailment, on the main Patio Naciente. For all your cheese requirements, go to La Queseria del Mercado; if you prefer French cheese, go to La Maison du Fromage.

Buy specialties to take away as keepsakes and gifting:

Look for Canary drinks, where the friendly and knowledgeable owner will walk you through the region's gardens, including eco-resorts.

Via Norte, a rosé made in the style of Lambrusco, is another popular option. Tastings are available during business hours, but if you're traveling in a group, call ahead.

Feel satiated as you fill your stomach with fresh seafood:

The restaurants connected to the fish market offer the freshest seafood from the ocean for a quick bite.
