Barrage Vauban

The Vauban Dam, also sometimes referred to as the Vauban Barrage in the local area, is one of Strasbourg's most important historical sites.

THINGS TO DO AT VAUBAN BARRAGE:

  • Acquaint yourself with the past of the location:

It was originally constructed as a defensive fortress against invading forces from other countries and a means of controlling the river flow. In more recent times, it has served both of these functions.

Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban, a military engineer, was responsible for constructing the covered bridge that spans the River.

It currently contains an art gallery inside, and visitors have access to the rooftop.

  • Examine the framework as well as the particulars that are included:

The windows on the upper two floors are arched and face the exterior of the building, and the viewing platform is located on the top floor.

The ground floor structure is shaped like an arch to allow the water flow to pass through it.

The barrage has a stunning design and is adorned with engravings that look like sculptures.

  • Let the beauty of the place engulf you:

The terrace offers a breathtakingly picturesque view that stretches across the network of canals that runs through the Petite France neighborhood to the Ponts Couverts and the spire of the cathedral that lies beyond. Climb to the top of the terrace to take it all in.
