Masafi Fort

Masafi Castle, built in the 1800s and restored in 2012, is situated in the Masafi suburb on the western edge of the Hajar Mountains in the United Arab Emirates, near the border of Fujairah and Ras Al Khaimah.

The village of Masafi, located at the inland entrance of Wadi Ham, which flows down to Fujairah City, straddles the border between the emirates of Fujairah and Ras Al Khaimah. It is also home to a barracks utilized by the United Arab Emirates Armed Forces.

Masafi Fort is characterized by its square shape and sturdy construction made of mud, stones, and palm trees. It features a circular tower in the southwest corner, while the courtyard contains several rooms constructed at different periods in history. Near the castle's base, you can discover a series of aflaj, ancient water channels that date back to the end of the millennium BC.

As one of the most prominent castles in the Masafi region, Masafi Castle showcases the area's ancient history and reflects the historical events that unfolded within its walls. Despite the loss of certain original elements, its beautiful and cohesive construction provides a glimpse into the building's strength and endurance in the past. During the restoration, locally sourced materials were used to ensure harmony with the surrounding environment. The castle and its tower underwent complete restoration along with their adjoining annexes during the period of 2009-2011.

Visiting Masafi Fort allows you to appreciate its stunning natural surroundings and gain insights into the rich historical heritage of the region.
