Sforzesco Castle, one of Milan's most well-known structures, was constructed as a fortification in the fourteenth century. One of the top museums in the city is now housed there. It was the first constructed stronghold in 1368. Later, it was expanded and transformed into a magnificent ducal palace, which was almost destroyed during the Golden Ambrosian Republic.

The Sforzesco family rebuilt the Castle, turning it into one of Italy's most opulent homes. Years later, when Spain and Austria were in power, the Castle was again used as a defense.

What to see in the Castello Sforzesco?

  • The Museum of Ancient Art is where valuable murals and sculptures from the Sforza family's collection that date to antiquity, the middle ages, and the Renaissance are kept. The Rondanini Pietà, Michelangelo's final and incomplete work, is one of the museum's attractions.
  • Over 1500 pieces of art from the thirteenth to the eighteenth century may be found in the Pinacoteca del Castello Sforzesco collection.
  • This complex also houses the Museum of Musical Instruments, a collection of unusual musical instruments from throughout the globe.
  • The Egyptian Museum here is home to several Egyptian artifacts, including sculptures, mummies, sarcophagi, and death masks.
  • Another museum here is the Archaeological Museum of Milan. The primary cultures that inhabited Lombardy from the Neolithic to the Middle Ages are represented in this museum.
