Paradesi Synagogue

The Paradesi Synagogue is located in a secluded part of Jew Town and has been around for more than a century, and it is home to several rare artifacts. The word 'Paradesi' can be translated as 'foreigner' in several Indian languages. It refers to the White Jews, a group of Jews hailing from Kodungallur, Europe, and the Middle East.

Mattancherry's small-town appeal is enhanced by the synagogue, which is a popular destination for a large number of visitors.

• Marvel at the aesthetics as you walk through the passage:

When you first enter the synagogue, your attention is immediately drawn to the expansive main hall, which features an exhibition of precious ancient antiques and contributes to the luxurious atmosphere. The beauty of the chandeliers and lighting is accentuated by the abundance of natural light provided by the large windows left open. The crystal chandeliers made in Belgium throughout the 19th century and imported into the United States can be dated to that period.

• The fact that each tile has a design that is distinct from the others never ceases to amaze guests that come to the site:

The synagogue's floor is covered in blue willow floor tiles that have been hand-painted, making it a feast for the eyes. During the 18th century, well-known Jewish merchant Ezekiel Rahabi brought these porcelain tiles from Canton, China. Canton is located in China. The exquisite construction of the synagogue is easily discernible in every one of its components, most notably in its magnificent pillars.

• Have a look through the collection:

There is a pulpit built-in with metal rails in the gallery. A private women's gallery with gold columns, a carved teak ark, and other decorative elements can be seen within the synagogue.

The first five books of 'Old Testament' are written on scrolls that are kept in an ark made of teak wood. Each scroll contains one of the books.

In this location, you may also find two gold crowns that were a gift to the Jewish community from the Kings of Kochi and Travancore.

• Walk back in time and appreciate art and literature:

Copper plates with Malayalam inscriptions that date back to the fourth century found in the synagogue are another priceless artifact. 

The inscriptions provide a record of the privileges that the past monarch of Cochin bestowed upon the population. Mirror image writing, also known as the kannadiyezhuthu script, is used to write it. 

In addition, the synagogue is home to an oriental rug that was a gift to the Jewish community from Haile Selassie, the former Emperor of Ethiopia.
