The Golra Sharif Railway Station, which can be found on the outskirts of Islamabad, offers visitors a look into the city's historical past. These days, the Golra Sharif Railway Station has recognized more for the Railway Heritage Museum that it is home to than for its function as a station where passengers get off and board trains.

Things to do at Pakistan Railways Heritage Museum:

  • Learn about the history of the site:

The British constructed the station in the days of the 'Great Game' and during military battles in Afghanistan as a logistical artery to connect Punjab and the country's north-western regions.

  • Observe the unique set-up that is one of a kind:

The museum first opened its doors in October of 2003 and is genuinely unique in its field. The station welcomes guests with a picturesque vista that includes ancient banyan trees, steam engines, a modest building designed in the Victorian style, and a tranquil setting. It is not confined to a single room and features vintage locomotive trains, steam engines, and lifters stationed at the platform.

  • Embrace the long and illustrious past of the railways:

The Golra Sharif Railway Station, which can be found on the outskirts of Islamabad, offers visitors a look into the city's historical past. The four historic locomotives and their accompanying coaches are open for guests to explore. These four engines are comprised of two narrow-gauge steam engines and two wide-gauge steam engines, respectively. Both of the broad gauge engines were formerly utilized on the Lahore-Khanewal railway. One of the broad gauge engines is a steam engine constructed in Canada, and the other is an electric engine.

  • Antiquities are preserved to educate the youth about history and evolution:

It is reported that Viceroy Lord Mountbatten and the Maharaja of Jodhpur used to own the coaches while they were in use. The coaches also have a fascinating history. In addition, a German mail coach and luxury coaches from the British era are tourist attractions.

  • Explore the alleys in the corridors that were once used for waiting for passengers:

Observe the displays of historical artefacts of significant value in these corridors. Alongside relics and instruments used in the railway industry as far back as the 1880s, Pakistan displays some of the railway equipment it seized from India during the Indo-Pakistani war of 1965. Old firearms, clothes, oil lamps, lights, dinnerware, bells, telephones, train models, stoves, heaters, fans, medical equipment, furniture, records, and photographs are some of the items that fall into this category.
