Ibizan Castle, also known as Castell d'Eivissa in the local Catalan language, is the beating center of the island. In spite of the fact that the castle continued to undergo renovations and expansions for several centuries after its initial construction in the 12th century, the ancient foundations remain intact. Unfortunately, the castle suffered severe deterioration over time and is currently in a state that might be described as partially derelict.

Due to recent renovations, several areas of the castle are now accessible to members of the general public. The grounds of the castle can be found at the very top of the Upper Town's fortifications. The castle is made up of a number of different buildings, some of which include the Tower of Homage, dating back to the 8th century, the governor's mansion dating back to the 18th century, and the infantry barracks dating back to the 18th century.

The Sant Jaume Bastion and the Sant Pere Bastion have been receiving the majority of the attention and emphasis of the reconstruction work. Every one of these bastions features an exhibition that is accessible to the general public. Even though guests are not permitted inside the main castle, it is nonetheless recommended that they tour the castle grounds as well as these two bastions.

How to explore Castell de Eivissa?

The Sant Jaume Bastion has been converted into a museum of military history. It is home to a weaponry exhibition that places a particular emphasis on military technology that was prevalent between the 16th and 18th centuries. The items that are on exhibit, which include cannons, mortar, muskets, helmets, and swords, may be touched by guests who come to view them.

The history of the castle is displayed at the Sant Pere Bastion. An audio-visual display that shows tourists how the city wall was constructed is available to them. A recreation of scaffolding from the time period of the Renaissance is featured in the exhibition. Giovanni Battista Calvi is credited with designing both bastions in the year 1555.
