Monasterio Cartuja

The Monasterio de la Cartuja (officially known as'Monasterio de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción') is a monastery located on a northern hill of Granada Spain.

The monastery is located about a quarter of a mile outside of the city centre of Granada, which contributes to the location's lower tourist foot traffic. It is a haven of peace in the middle of the busy city.

Learn about the devotees of the site:

The Carthusians were the monks who lived in the Cartuja monastery up until the year 1835; these monks lived as hermits in the monastery and adhered to the monastery's very stringent teachings. They devoted the majority of their time to praying, and in addition, they strictly adhered to their vows of fasting and remaining silent.

Understand the historical primitiveness:

The construction of the monastery began in 1506, but it was not finished in its present form until 300 years later. The interior of the monastery is decorated in a special baroque style. As a direct consequence of this, the details and finishing of the monastery exhibit elements of both the Gothic and Renaissance design styles.

Embrace the architectural beauty that encompasses the tasteful collection of masterpieces:

Discovering one of the most beautifully decorated Carthusian monasteries in all of Spain requires penetrating the austere exterior of this historic monastic complex, which is home to one of the most austere facades. After passing through the doors, proceed up the stairs and into the ornate main church of the monastery to take in its impressive architecture.

Things to do at Monasterio Cartuja:

Pay special attention to these highlights:

Take a look at the four sculptures that are currently standing in front of the church. One of them is an effigy of Saint Bruno, who was the founder of the Carthusian Order.

Look up at the ornate canopies made of wood and mirrors that are suspended above the main altar, and pay attention to the numerous paintings and sculptures that are hung on the walls and ceilings throughout the space.

After passing behind the altar and entering the Sancta Sanctorum, you will discover an extravagant tabernacle constructed of marble and jasper that stands at the centre of the space.

Stroll through the church for lessons in evolution of art through the passage of time:

There is a church close to the monastery of La Cartuja that is home to some beautiful marble sculptures and paintings. If you are interested in learning more about the history of the Carthusian Order, you should go to the Refectory and look at the paintings that were painted by Juan Sanchez Cotán, who was a monk and an artist.
