Phoenix Park

Phoenix Park is situated close to the heart of Dublin. However, as you pass through the gates, you might as well be on the other side of the world from the crowded urban center. Because it is open 365 days a year and has two main gates accessible at all times, you can spend as much time as you wish in this urban haven. Phoenix Park is a great playground for various sports, from jogging to polo. It is also the residence of the President of Ireland, the United States of America Ambassador, and a sizable herd of fallow deer. Additionally, this is the location of the zoo that is considered the oldest in Europe.

Things to do at Phoenix Park:

  • Admire wildlife at Dublin Zoo:

The Dublin Zoo first opened its gates in 1830, making it the fourth oldest zoo in the world. It encompasses a total area of 69 acres and is home to approximately 400 creatures across several diverse habitats. These habitats include the Orangutan Forest, the Kaziranga Forest Trail, the Sea Lion Cove, the African Savanna, and the House of Reptiles.

  • Marvel at the architecture of Áras an Uachtaráin:

In Irish, the phrase 'President's Residence' is pronounced 'aw-rahs on ook-tar-awn,' and the building has a rich and eventful past. Suppose the neoclassical style, angled three-point portico, stoic Greek columns, and white-washed walls seem vaguely familiar. It is because the ras inspired the architect James Hoban, who was born in Ireland and designed the White House in the United States. The custom of lighting a candle and placing it in the window dates back centuries and is meant to help Irish people living abroad find their way back home.

  • Soak in the beauty of People's Flower Garden

The People's Flower Gardens cover 22 acres, are situated adjacent to the Parkgate Street entrance, and were designed, mapped out, and fenced in 1864 to showcase Victorian horticulture at its ultimate pinnacle of excellence. Eating outside in this location is highly recommended due to the presence of a decorative lake and numerous picnic sites.

  • Consider visiting the Viking graveyard:

In the 19th century, archaeologists uncovered a Viking graveyard in the park. The graveyard contained forty burials, as well as swords and Viking jewelry that was used for decoration.

  • Discover the many monuments:

Bicycle through several notable landmarks, such as the Papal Cross and the Wellington monument, which stands 62 meters tall and is the biggest obelisk in all of Europe.

  • Visit the Phoenix Park Visitor Center:

A medieval tower house that dates back to the 15th century and was first concealed within the walls of a Georgian mansion until 1978 was open to the public 1978. It is currently included in the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre, which provides interpretations of the park's history from 3500 BC up to the present day. The Ashtown Demesne also includes a Victorian Kitchen Walled Garden that dates back to the 19th century. The knowledgeable gardeners there hold seminars open to the public every second Saturday of the month at 10:30 a.m.
