The Corpus Christi Harbor Bridge was designed by one of the most significant bridge design firms in the United States at the time, the engineering firm Modjeski and Masters. Using a single lift span was an engineering breakthrough that helped set the standard for lift bridges around the globe. The bridge was dedicated to Alfredo C. Cantu, who was the mayor of Corpus Christi from 1957 to 1961. Cantu was a strong supporter of the plan to expand the port, and he was a key player in obtaining funds for the bridge. It was the first bridge in the world to use a single lift span when it was opened to traffic on April 20, 1959.

The Harbor Bridge is one of the longest bridges in Texas. Including the approach spans, it is 6.2 miles (10 km) long. The bridge provides access to one of the busiest ports in the United States, the Port of Corpus Christi, which handles a broad variety of cargo, including petroleum products, chemicals, and grain.

The bridge has had several major repairs and upgrades over the years to ensure it is safe and functions well. In 2019, a separate lane for pedestrians and bikes was built.

The bridge is a popular tourist destination because it provides breathtaking views of Corpus Christi Bay and the surrounding area. Every year during the holiday season, the Harbor Bridge serves as the location for the Harbor Lights Festival. This festival is a celebration of the holiday season that includes a parade, a lighting ceremony, and other fun events.

People can also take great pictures of the Harbor Bridge at night when it is lit up with bright lights for the Harbor Lights Festival or other special events.
