Il Gigante is a sculpture of Neptune and was initially constructed out of concrete in 1910 to adorn the seaward edge of the beautiful Villa Pastine. It is now situated at the end of a well-liked sunbathing beach in the Italian Riviera town of Monterosso del Mare. The 14-meter-tall sculpture of Neptune holding back the waves rapidly became known as the town's symbol and was captured in photographs and depicted on postcards of the time.

It was created and constructed by the well-known Jewish-Italian sculptor Arrigo Minerbi, who is best recognized for his work in various cathedrals. Not so fortunately, the Villa Pastine was the target of allied bombing raids. The statue significantly deteriorated in 1966 as a result of choppy waters. Today's faded elegance of the ruins almost blends with the steep cliff face as they face the sea.

Like some type of Atlas figure, he appears to be supporting the entire cliffside on his shoulders. If you manage to make it down to this remote part of Monterosso, it is nevertheless a fascinating sight.
