Grand Theatre

In 1780, the public was first given access to the Grand Theater, which featured an Opera Auditorium (2013), three performance theaters, and a musician Center. It is a center for excellence, production, transmission, and professional integration in the domains of musical composition, choreography, and dance. It has a total of 400 employees and represents the work of 180 artists.

The Opéra National de Bordeaux features lyrical, choreographic, and symphonic seasons, and it is the leading cultural employer in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine Region. It is the second leading cultural operator in France in terms of permanent artistic employment, and it is the leading cultural employer in the region.

The overall goal of the cultural project is to establish and cultivate strong connections with various sorts of audiences across the area. This manifests itself, in particular, as a marked uptick in the number of cultural projects that include audiences in acts of initiation, mediation, and outreach.

The structure, designed by the well-known architect Victor Louis, is widely regarded as among the most stunning theaters in the world. The wooden construction surrounding the building gives it remarkable acoustics in addition to the aesthetic value that the building already possesses.

What to do in the Grand Theater?

• Attend one of their manufacturing workshops, where they teach everything about stage sets, costumes, accessories, and costume decoration.
• It has been hosting Pygmalion in Residence since 2014 in association with the Ballet department of the National Opera of Paris. Watching these ballerinas perform is a true delight to the eye!
• Be a part of one of 120 programs conducted every year in this theater in its 250-seater auditorium to truly experience French culture.
• Go on a tour of this theater to check out the ballet, choir, and orchestra sections. Also, be sure to look out the nine muses and three goddesses from Greek mythology that sit atop the twelve Corinthian columns that make up the exterior of this building. The chandelier that is still in use today was hung in 1917. It has a total capacity of 400 lights, is constructed out of Bohemia crystal, and weighs a total of 1.2 tonnes. Take the route to the grand staircase to experience the extravaganza.
• In addition to the classic repertory, the company also performs ballets in neo-classical and contemporary forms. This ballet group performs each season in the Grand Théâtre and also on tour in France and abroad.
