In the year 1865, the statue of the Virgin, also referred to as Le Rocher de la Vierge, was built. According to historical accounts, Napoleon III decided to use this rocky point as the anchorage for the port.
Napoleon III came up with many ideas throughout his life, but this one is undeniably one of the best.
He reasoned that it would be smart to cut out this rock, known as the Virgin on the rock, surrounded by a reef.
After it was finished, he also arranged for the construction of a wooden bridge so that it could be connected to the cliff.
It is connected to the coast by a metal footbridge fabricated in the Tour Eiffel workshops. On top of some craggy rocks sits a statue of the Virgin Mary made of smooth, snow-white marble.
Paths winding through stunning gardens and leading to the Rocher via a footbridge can be reached by following said paths.
A viewing area beneath the Rocher can be reached via a tunnel that offers views of the statue and the beaches.
Additionally, it is believed that the ship's light white color represents a blinding light that protects the sailors.
Be sure to stroll along the slightly sloping ramps shaded by tamarisk trees as you make your way to Grande Plage. You won't want to miss it!
The impressive Musée de la Mer and Cité de l'Océan are directly behind the Rocher de la Vierge. This museum and ocean center features nearly fifty aquariums and interactive exhibits about marine life.
