Citadelle

Located in the heart of Ajaccio, the Miollis Citadel, whose foundation stone was laid in 1492 and which has continued to transform to this day, was a subject of an ambitious and unprecedented project of development and enhancement. Turning its back on the sea as well as in the city center, the Citadel is an unexplored setting of Ajaccio, a palimpsest of eras, architecture, and stories.

This 10,500 m2 place, built on a total area of two and a half hectares, is located in the midst of the Gulf of Ajaccio. The Citadel was built on a strategic site by the Genoese to effectively protect the city from maritime attacks. It originally consisted of a dungeon or Citadel (Castello) and a low speaker. The castle was built in 1492 under the authority of the Genoese Office of Saint-Georges. In 1553, when Sampiero and French troops led by Marshal de Thermes arrived, work was carried out to expand the Citadel. About thirty buildings were destroyed, including the Sainte-Croix church, the first cathedral in the Genoese city.

The Citadelle today is a local historical landmark with many local shops, squares, and other landmarks nearby for the tourist to see.

Boulevard Pascal Rossini is said to be one of the most attractive beach boulevards in all of Ajaccio, and it is located right close to the fortress. You will have wonderful views of the Bay of Ajaccio from the boulevard, as well as from the restaurants that are located along the promenade itself.

What to do near Citadelle?

  • Due to the fact that the stronghold is currently occupied by French military personnel, there is no way to take a tour of the building. To see the most impressive aspects of the Citadelle, however, you should take a stroll along Boulevard - Danielle Casanova and Quai Napoléon. Among these features is the Citadelle's imposing watchtower.
  • The coastline that may be found at the base of the Citadel is far larger and more appealing (set away from the road). You can therefore unpack your picnic basket here and enjoy a wonderful time bonding with your family.
  • There are restaurants in the area where you can gorge on the cuisine of the region. There will also be shops for you to peruse so that you may bring back some mementos from your travels.
  • Take images of the city from the top of the Citadel, which offers sweeping vistas in every direction.
