The iconic Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption Cathedral stands on the central mound of Clermont. It is known by the name of Clermont-Ferrand Cathedral. It is the first and largest building entirely built in Volvic lava. It rises on the location of earlier churches, as evidenced by the crypt.

It took 7 centuries to complete it, with long site interruptions. It is the seat of the Archbishops of Clermont. The French Ministry of Culture has recognized it as a monument Historique since 1862.

How to explore Cathédrale Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption?

  • It was built in the 19th century with 3 bays, the portal, and the West arrows.
  • The 96.1-meter-tall twin spires of this building soar over the town's rooftops.
  • The first large-scale use of black lava stone ever done was in this cathedral.
  • The dark hue of the structure is provided by locally quarried volcanic stones, whose strength enables the construction of incredibly delicate pillars.
  • The flying buttresses, which enable the nave aisles to be flooded with light, and the entire amount of light from the apsidal windows are able to enter the sanctuary, thanks to the choir-rotunda pillars' elliptical design.
  • Overall, the cathedral is inspired by the radiant Gothic of the Ile de France.
  • It is the setting for a uniquely-crafted set of stained glass windows, including Romanesque murals and lancets.
  • Visit Vulcania nearby. It is a volcano-themed educational amusement park and museum in France. There is something for visitors of all ages which is entertaining and immersive. This region in Auvergne contains a sequence of dormant volcanoes.
  • If you wish to go trekking, then go to a highly-recommended Regional Natural Park - the Auvergne Volcanoes Regional Natural Park. It is the largest natural park on the French mainland, which consists of four volcanic massifs and an ancient granite plateau. It is a lovely hiking location as well as a lovely camping location.
