Located in the northeastern part of Abha, Shamsan Castle stands as a testament to the ever-evolving rich heritage of Asir. Its recent restoration has not only revitalized the structure but has also provided a glimpse into the historical narrative of the region. Positioned atop Shamsan Mountain at an impressive elevation of 2,200 meters above sea level, the castle served as a pivotal gateway from North Aaqabat Al-Shaar to Abha. Over time, it assumed the crucial role of safeguarding the city.
Covering a sprawling 5,389 square meters across rugged terrain, the castle boasts an uneven layout highlighted by a circular tower nestled in its northern corner. Alongside this distinctive feature, a sizable rectangular building emerges, accompanied by two additional towers and a principal entrance on the western facade that offers panoramic views of the city. A grand 4-meter-wide door within the western perimeter grants access to a central courtyard enveloped by various rooms and amenities.
Impressively, most of the castle's walls have endured the test of time and remain remarkably intact. To crown this architectural marvel, the castle's roof is ingeniously crafted from Juniper tree beams sourced from the lush western forests of the Asir Mountains.
