Raidah Sanctuary

The Raidah Protected Area stands as one of the Kingdom's finest wildlife reserves. Encompassing just 9 sq. km, Raidah serves as a sanctuary for Saudi Arabia's imperiled species. Positioned 20 km northwest of Abha, a city in the south, below Jabal Saudah's steep incline, this natural reserve nurtures distinct flora and fauna. Alongside its traditional houses, it's renowned for its scenic landscapes, housing banana gardens, coffee plantations, and a myriad of plants. This haven is often referred to as the "paradise" of Sarawat, the mountain range that parallels the Arabian Peninsula's western coast.

Recognized for its biodiversity, Raidah shelters nearly 100 bird species and over 332 plant varieties. The region's steep hillsides are lushly clothed in vegetation, particularly juniper trees, while streams cascade from the mountaintops, coursing through Raidah's diverse sections. These waterways, some of which wind through the juniper forest, are a hallmark of Raidah. The cliff within Raidah is an element of the Arabian Shield, an outcrop of Precambrian crystalline rocks on the Red Sea's edges.

Crowning the cliff, a forest flourishes with juniper trees, wild olive plants, acacia, and various cacti species. Abundant and diverse vegetation covers the mountain slopes' southern, western, and northern aspects, encompassing banana trees and coffee plantations. The steep walls of Raidah Valley are optimal for glimpsing numerous creatures, including gazelles, mongooses, and leopards. Baboons, caracal lynx, and Arabian wolves also traverse the territory, which is safeguarded against hunting.
